Tourism New Zealand

Aotearoa New Zealand were celebrating Matariki as a public holiday in 2022. Tourism New Zealand wanted to produce a PR campaign to whakamana this special occasion. As their cultural creative agency, of course they wanted something with mana and a global tint.

Creating something special for Matariki is a must for brands in Aotearoa. So RUN worked withTourism New Zealand, Dr. Rangi Mātamua, Grammy Award-Winner ‘Puoro Jerome’ and the God of Wind and Weather ‘Tāwhirimātea’ to collaborate on something special.

Our idea was to create something with so much mana, you had to watch it and share it. We called upon the heavy hitters of te ao Māori and collaborated with Dr.Rangi Mātamua, Puoro Jerome Grammy Award Winner and the God of Wind and Weather ‘Tāwhirimātea’ to create a music composition to highlight the significance of the god in the Matariki story and also to showcase something different to the usual narrative.

We based the music composition around Ngā Taritari o Matariki (the cold winds of Matariki) to signal to whānau to return home to to their whenua to reflect, remember and to plan of the future. We also had Puoro Jerome actually collaborate with Tāwhirimātea for the composition. This meant the actual wind of the god would pass through his instruments actually making sounds that then Puoro would mimic across his various instruments, showcasing the mastery of both Puoro and the god.
